Industry and academia together: Idea to Product!
As a social responsibility project, the “I2P – Idea to Product” project, organized for the second time this year in collaboration with the Istanbul SMD and the Faculty of Art and Design at MEF University, was led by the workshop instructor, MSc. Architect Erhan Vural, a member of the Istanbul Association of Architects in Private Practice.
The project aims to strengthen the connection between industry and academia, with the goal of combining different materials from various manufacturers and transforming them into an installation by the students. The course aimed to help students develop skills in material knowledge, the transformation of ideas into products, communication, and managing the production process. The studio, which culminated in a final jury and closing exhibition on January 13, 2025, took place in 4 stages.
In the first stage, students observed Istanbul from their professional perspectives and reduced problems caused by design deficiencies to the material level, reflecting on their roles in these issues as designers. Then, individual visuals were transformed into a collective collage using artificial intelligence tools. In the third stage, visits were made to the production facilities of four different material manufacturers, including Feltouch, where students learned about production processes and how materials could be utilized in design. Finally, the installation was completed through assembly.
